Welcome to Chelmsford

Chelmsford is located in Mid Essex, thirty-one miles from London and has a population of over 157,000 (2001 census), largely living in the main urban areas of Chelmsford and South Woodham Ferrers. The borough comprises a number of suburban areas around these main urban areas and in the larger villages of Danbury, East and West Hanningfield, Great Leighs, Little Waltham and Little Baddow, within a rural setting.

The main source of air pollution in the borough is road traffic emissions from major roads, notably the A12, A414, A138 and B1016. Chelmsford City Council has declared one Air Quality Management Area (AQMA), the Army & Navy Roundabout Other pollution sources, including commercial, industrial and domestic sources, also make a contribution to background pollution concentrations.

Once upon a time, and for five days, Chelmsford was the capital of England!
