08/08/2011 - Castle Point Borough Council`s air quality monitoring station
News image for Castle Point Borough Council`s air quality monitoring station In July Castle Point Borough Council installed a new monitoring site at the Old Fire Station on A13 in Hadleigh. Providing valuable measurements of NOX and SO2 concentrations the site will be a welcome addition to the air pollution measurements in Essex, and, as a part of London network, the site will provide valuable information about air pollution to the east of the capital.

Castle Point is one of the longstanding boroughs with continuous monitoring of air pollution in Essex. The measurements have been carried out since May 1996 on Canvey Island, at Furtherwick Park School, until demolition of the building in June 2010. The new site is located to measure air pollution from road traffic reflecting the importance of this as the main source of pollution in the borough, notably from the A13, A127 and A130. Other pollution sources potential impacting on the area include the power stations along the Thames Estuary and the oil refinery in Thurrock.

Air pollution in the borough will be under increased scrutiny in the coming months as Castle Point prepares to host the mountain bike events at Hadleigh Farm during 2012 Olympic Games.
